car description

This 220 Convertible A is in a very good, partially restored condition, taking the driver and passengers back to the 50s. The exciting history begins in 1952 with the delivery to the spinning mill J.F. Adolff in Backnang, which played an important role in Germany from 1832 to 1994. The next owner is Mr. Anton Schneider, whose only record is a 1955 customer service book that he had made out to himself at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Tegernsee, Bavaria. Mr. Schneider gave the car to his niece Mrs. Pierbug, who verbally confirmed to the last owner that her uncle was the second owner. In 1996, Mrs. Pierburg sold the convertible to the last and current owner, who used the car extensively and meticulously documented the last 27 years of ownership.

The convertible has a very informative folder of history as well as a data card, a well preserved suitcase set and an original owner's manual. The DB 040 black paint and brown leather (1501) interior are the initial delivery color combination and match the data card, as do the chassis and engine numbers.

The partial restoration, which took place between 1997 and 1998, included a new paint job, a new ash wood frame and an overhaul of engine and transmission. The brown leather interior with a gorgeous patina was saved in the process and is still in its original condition. The above mentioned work was accompanied by the expert Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Lenz and documented in detail.

It is a very well maintained beauty with the best conditions for a good value retention but also an amazing driver!

History of the series

The Mercedes 220 was the first post-war six-cylinder engine from Mercedes. The newly designed engine was fitted into the unchanged chassis of the Mercedes 170. Externally, the hood was adapted, and the formerly free-standing headlights were also integrated into the fenders.

The 187 series was initially delivered as a sedan, convertible A and B, and finally 1953 a coupe was added. During the construction period between 1951 and 1955, 1,278 Cabriolets A were produced.

The 80 hp output enabled a top speed of around 145 km/h, a remarkable figure at the time. For comparison: a Porsche 356 1300 drove about as fast.
