car description

This Mercedes-Benz 300 SL roadster offered for sale here is an exceptional example which bears its history in the form of badges on the hood.

Its journey began in December 1957, when it was delivered to LA having been ordered by the US ompany Studebaker Packard. A time when such vehicles embodied not only luxury, but also the future. Originally used as a demonstration car at the Mercedes-Benz branch in Hollywood, this roadster eventually found its way to Mr. Green from Anaheim, USA, before being imported to Germany in 1998, into the hands of the then President of the Mercedes-Benz Veterans Club.

Over 66 years, this SL has retained its authenticity without ever having undergone a complete restoration. Despite regular maintenance work, almost all identification numbers have been retained, apart from the front-left axle and the gearbox. The engine as well as the injection pump, rear axle, clutch and brakes have already been overhauled and serviced regularly in the following years.

The interior and exterior color scheme correspond to the original specifications according to the data card, with the exception of the soft top color, which was changed from blue to black. The special "patina look" of the paintwork gives this roadster the irresistible charm of a first paint job. This authenticity is continued in the interior. Only the seats and a few details have been renewed. Otherwise, it is in its original condition.

Discover the timeless beauty and potential of this exceptional example, which is ready to continue its history and end up in the hands of an enthusiast.

History of the series

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster W198 II is a timeless icon that builds on the legacy of the legendary 300 SL Gullwing. Its history is closely linked to the pursuit of technological innovation, racing dominance and unrivalled elegance.

The origins of the 300 SL date back to the 1950s, when Mercedes-Benz became involved in motor racing and developed a car that excelled both on the racetrack and on the road. The legendary Gullwing, launched in 1954, impressed with its groundbreaking design, characterised by the distinctive upward-swinging gullwing doors, which gave its form and function a unique touch.

Under the bonnet, the 300 SL Roadster had a powerful 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with petrol injection - a technological masterpiece for its time that made it one of the fastest production cars of its era. This combination of advanced technology and impressive performance made the roadster not only a road car, but also a competition racing car that triumphed on various racetracks. The fascination with the 300 SL Roadster goes beyond its technical specifications. Its exquisite interior with the finest materials, the precise workmanship and the pursuit of perfection in every detail reflect the craftsmanship that has made Mercedes-Benz legendary. This vehicle is not only a symbol of automotive engineering, but also a milestone in the history of automobile construction. Its timeless beauty, racing heritage and iconic status have made the 300 SL Roadster a coveted collector's treasure that continues to capture the hearts of enthusiasts and classic car lovers around the world.
